Understanding Your BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate how much body fat you have. BMI is used to indicate if you're in a healthy weight range, underweight, overweight, or obese.
BMI Categories:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5–24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25–29.9
- Obesity (Class 1): BMI 30–34.9
- Obesity (Class 2): BMI 35–39.9
- Extreme Obesity (Class 3): BMI 40 or greater
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a useful screening tool, but it does have limitations:
- It may overestimate body fat in athletes with muscular builds
- It may underestimate body fat in older persons or those who have lost muscle mass
- It doesn't account for body composition (muscle vs. fat)
- It doesn't consider where fat is stored (abdominal fat carries more health risks)
For a more complete assessment of your health, consider other factors like waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, family history, and lifestyle factors.
